Highgate is an up-and-coming neighbourhood that is close to transit and amenities like shopping, an expansive new community centre and a library, all within walking distance. It’s not far from the border with New Westminster and runs from Canada Way to Imperial Street, Edmonds to Gilley Avenue. The neighbourhood is comprised mostly of single-family bungalows with newer condo towers and townhomes clustered around the Highgate shopping centre.
Highgate Village is the commercial heart of the Highgate neighbourhood. It features a grocery store and large drug store as well as a number of restaurants, a bakery, an optical centre, financial services and a fitness centre. It is supported by independent businesses of all description along Kingsway and around the corner on Edmonds.
The neighbourhood also features the newest branch of the Burnaby Public Library and the new Edmonds Community Centre with a pool, gymnasium, fitness and art studios as well as a daycare. The adjoining park has been enhanced with a new playground and sports courts.
Highgate’s central location also makes it easy to access the natural beauty and cultural opportunities at nearby Deer Lake Park with its network of walking trails around the picturesque urban lake and range of art galleries, studios and performance theatres at the Shadbolt Centre.
