Montecito is an established residential neighbourhood nestled at the southwest side of Burnaby Mountain, next to the Burnaby Mountain Golf Course. It runs from Lougheed Highway in the south to Halifax Street in the north, Sperling Avenue to the west and Greystone Drive in the East.
Montecito is comprised mostly of single family homes with pockets of townhomes and a small cluster of high-rise apartments. The neighbourhood adjoins the Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area, a forested park laced with hiking and biking trails and breathtaking views of Vancouver, the North Shore Mountains, Burrard Inlet. On a clear day you can even see Mt. Baker. At the top of Burnaby Mountain, Simon Fraser University is a public research university with more than 30,000 students and almost 1,000 faculty. The campus is renowned for its singular architectural style, most of it by Arthur Erickson.
Montecito also includes the Burnaby Mountain Golf Course, an 18-hole municipal facility that also includes a clubhouse, restaurant and driving range. Neighbouring Squint Lake Park features playgrounds, walking trails, tennis courts and championship softball diamonds.
A small retail plaza including a grocery store is located in the centre of Montecito. But the neighbourhood is handy to the busy commercial areas around Lougheed Mall and the Heights shopping district along Hastings Street.
The Sperling-Burnaby Lake SkyTrain station is located within the Montecito neighbourhood. There are major bus routes located on Sperling Avenue, Broadway, Halifax and Duthie Avenue that provide most of the neighbourhood with transit access.
