Vancouver West – False Creek

Vancouver West – False Creek

The neighbourhood runs along the south shore of False Creek from Burrard St to Ontario St and extending south until W 6th Ave. False Creek was a mainly industrial area until the 1970’s when the area surrounding Granville Island was urbanized with parks, residential neighbourhoods, waterfront access and community amenities. Since the revitalization, the government, municipalities and developers have worked hard to create a high density waterfront community with a beautiful Public Market featuring some of the best seafood Vancouver has to offer, great parks and a beautiful seawall. False Creek is a great community to live in for its ideal setting along the water and its close proximity to great outdoor activities.

Neighbourhood amenities

False Creek is a great place to live for both urbanites and outdoor enthusiasts. Just along the south shore of False Creek, residents can find several paddling clubs that offer dragon boating, kayaking, canoeing, outrigger canoes and paddle boarding. If water sports are not your thing, False Creek boasts a seawall that many people run, walk or cycle everyday. Residents can find additional fitness activities at Creekside Community Centre which offers a full fitness centre, gymnasiums, dance and yoga studios as well as a childcare centre. A second community centre (False Creek Community Centre) can be found on Granville Island and offers great yoga, water sports and dance programs for people of all ages.

False Creek’s most notable attraction is Granville Island and it is known for its art cultural, artisanal products, great restaurants and the Public Market. Exploring the streets and the different areas of Granville Island is a great way to spend the day. Visitors can find art shops, wholesale seafood suppliers, a vodka and whiskey distillery (The Liberty Distillery), sake wine makers (Artisan SakeMaker), and the Granville Island Brewery. Granville Island Public Market is one of Vancouver’s biggest tourist attractions. It offers a plethora of different produce, butchers, bakeries, cafes and artisanal food products.

Granville Island is home to a rich art culture and can find art galleries scattered throughout the area. Arts Club Theatre, Backstage Lounge and Performance Works are great venues to visit to catch a live show. Granville Island is also home to Emily Carr University of Art and Design, which is regarded as one of the best art, media and design schools in Vancouver.

False Creek is well serviced by public transit, especially since the development of the Canada Line. Residents who live in the Southeast portion of False Creek have quick and easy access to Olympic Village Station and residents who live in the Southwestern have access to the well serviced bus routes along W 6th, Burrard and Granville St. All amenities are in walking or biking distance.
