Neighbourhood amenities

Vancouver Heights. Burnaby Heights. Or just the Heights. Whatever locals prefer to call it, the neighbourhood in Burnaby’s northwest corner near the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge is one of its most beloved. It has a true community feel with a lively multicultural shopping district along Hastings Street, lovely parks, access to the Trans Canada hiking trail and some spectacular views of Vancouver’s skyline, the Burrard Inlet and the North Shore Mountains.

The Heights commercial district on Hastings Street is a dynamic mix of independent shops, services and restaurants. Italian deli’s stand next to Vietnamese Pho restaurants next to Parisienne cafés. It’s also home to one of Metro Vancouver’s most renowned fine dining restaurants, The Pear Tree. Twice a year the busy street is closed off to traffic; once in early June for the Hats Off Day festival that features a community parade and day-long street party and again in July for the Giro di Burnaby bike race.

Confederation Park, at the north end of Willingdon Avenue, is the neighbourhood’s largest and most notable recreation space with a pool, library, seniors centre as well as sports fields, lacrosse box, basketball courts, playgrounds, lawn bowling pitch, skate park and a running/walking track. On warm summers days there’s usually a lively informal game of bocce going on in the shaded grass at the park’s south end as neighbours gather to roll some balls and exchange gossip. The park also hosts a summertime series of outdoor movies.
