Metrotown is a bustling urban hub with a diverse range of housing from modest bungalows built in the 1950s, to large custom single family homes, to gleaming modern high-rises with views that stretch from Mt. Baker to Vancouver Island. The neighbourhood runs from Patterson in the west to Gilley in the East, and between Kingsway and Rumble.
Neighbourhood amenities
Metrotown is dominated by the busy commercial stretch along Kingsway, the neighbourhood’s northern perimeter, that includes three shopping malls. Metropolis at Metrotown is British Columbia’s largest shopping mall with hundreds of stores, two department stores, movie theatres, dozens of restaurants and services like dentists and daycare. Nearby, The Crystal offers an authentic Asian shopping experience with scores of unique retailers and restaurants.
The malls are supported by a diverse range of independent shops, restaurants and services, including two major hotels, along Kingsway.
But there’s more to Metrotown than shopping and eating. The Bonsor Senior Centre is a new facility alive with active seniors gathering for social activities, fitness classes and meetings. Next door, the Bonsor Recreation Complex offers a diverse range of fitness and arts programs for all ages, including swimming in its indoor pool, racquetball, basketball, dance and crafts, as well as soccer and baseball on its outdoor playing fields.
The area is dotted with numerous small neighbourhood parks. But they are dwarfed by nearby Central Park, a 90-hectare urban oasis of nature trails, playgrounds, fitness circuits, a 9-hole par 3 golf course, tennis courts and two ponds that sometimes freeze solid enough in winter to allow outdoor skating.
And if you can’t find everything you need or want in Metrotown, Vancouver is only a short SkyTrain ride away from one of two stations that service the neighbourhood.
